The Vikings founded Torshavn in the 13th century, on the south coast of Streym, the largest of the seventeen windswept, cliff-ringed Faeroe Islands. The locals speak Faroese, a language somewhere between Icelandic and Danish, and swear allegiance to Denmark. The climate here is surprisingly mild, thanks to the warm North Atlantic Current.
